How to Cut Your Own #BettieBangs

Only do this if you're comfortable with scissors and trimming. Or okay with the results not being perfect. Otherwise, leave it to a professional. I, admittedly, do trim my own bangs. I realized I had to do this because I don't have the time to go to the hair salon for a trim every 2-4 weeks. Plus I had experience cutting hair in college: I'd cut my friends' hair who were in fraternities, in exchange for bottles of red wine, before I turned 21. That's how much I love red wine. ;-)

These are the tips I gleaned from my two favorite video tutorials: one from Susie Brown of the JaneDear Girls, the other from Cherry Dollface. Cherry Dollface uses clippers. i only ever use scissors, haircutting shears. But I like her approach. The video clips are listed below the my tip list.

First and Foremost, Don't Show Fear. The rest are practical tips:
  • pull your non-bang hair away
  • find the starting point by laying a comb flat on your head; right where the comb starts to lift off your head is where the bang line should start
  • have bangs come down to an imaginary line at the edge of the eyebrows for the width
  • wet the bangs down well
  • clip a good portion back to create the line
  • find the center in the middle of the bang
  • cut the wet hair to just above the eyebrow
  • do not cut the hair while it's between your fingers
  • comb it down then cut at the teeth of the comb for a natural fall
  • do another section, find the cutting line
  • trim again center first then sides
  • do a final layer
  • dry the bangs
  • do any touch ups afterwards
